This Weekend We Bring You - No Sleep! All the Time!!
Liam's fever abated on Friday afternoon but was back up to 102.2 on Friday night so he went to bed with some Tylenol in his system.
Then he woke up in the middle of the night & wanted to cuddle with me, so I let him come back to bed with me (Matias was working on our server upgrade so was pulling an all-nighter). He slept peacefully until morning and woke up with a 98.8 temp so we thought we had cleared the storm.
Did I mention that on Friday he only napped for 20 minutes? And it took nearly 1 1/2 hours to get those 20 minutes out of the way?
I should mention that Saturday he slept for even less - he was awake before I was done with my shower & I take 10 minute showers. I could hear him crying in the shower. Then he didn't sleep anymore until bedtime.
Then night time was a joke. I had gone to Kym's to crop & came home before midnight to find Matias up with Liam. He came down about 15 minutes later with Liam upstairs crying for me - I go up & he's asleep before I can sit down with him. I rock him for 30-40 minutes for good measure since Matias had told me that he would nod off, stir & wake - lather, rinse, repeat - for the entire time that I was gone. I think he stayed asleep for a couple of hours until he didn't (yeah the brain ain't working) & Matias brought him into bed. Where he promptly stayed awake, crying (a really sad cry) with a slam-dunk-break-your-heart-ending of "Mama" after every crying jag.
Finally at 7:30ish I got him his bottle & brewed some sweet, sweet, Tim's and now, I am hoping that he has fallen asleep because I just had to go back up there & rock him before he threw himself back into his crib begging for sleep.
And to top it all off, we now have snot. Snotty sneezes have descended. Seriously, I think I would give my right arm (I'm left handed!) to be able to come home from CT without a cold. It's hard enough sometimes to come home from traveling & readjust to 'home-life' with a toddler but it's even worse when that toddler is sick & down for the count for the next week or so THEN add in, a possible, sick Mama & Dada & you begin to wish that the NJ Turnpike would someone collapse into the sound.

Sleep, we all need sleep.
Sunday & Monday nights he woke up & it took him sleeping with us to get him back to sleep. That was not comfortable, nor what I needed since I had been away on a CM Retreat staying up until 4am each night. Tuesday & Wednesday he slept through the night. YAY! Matias got sick on Tuesday & ran a low, low, low grade fever thus rendering him useless for all of Wednesday leaving me to fend for myself, and I've also been sick for close to two weeks now. Wednesday he woke up again & I just brought him into the guest room with me where he finally fell asleep probably around 3 or 4am. I woke up with a swollen eye, complete with a burning sensation whenever I tried to open it, which unfortunately, was often. I was on the couch with a compress & tea bag tending to my blocked sinuses. Which in turn lead to a river of snot, forking right down my throat & my nose causing me to get sick. Vomiteous sick. Last night, he was up at 1am & I was with him until 2:30 until I could not take the crying & not sleeping anymore (after baby oragel, putting a blanket on his crib sheet to warm it up & bringing him to bed...) I told Matias he had to get him & there he cried until 4am, in Matias' arms. I didn't sleep through that, Matias didn't sleep through that & unless Liam can sleep AND cry, he didn't sleep through that either.
Thankfully, he slept until 10am and went down for his nap at 12:15. Matias is upstairs sleeping while I'm down here cleaning (and taking a break!). I finally got around to cleaning up his "painting" on the glass doors - also not so much fun to clean up milk off of glass. Liam is in a fine mood & for that I'm grateful cause the last thing we need is a house full of grumpertens.
I thought at first that his night-waking was a side-effect of Mama being away for 2 sleeps and 2 1/2 days, not to toot my own horn or anything, but sadly it appears that this is not the case. I can see a tip of the molar poking through so we can only hope that it starts moving quicker, pleaseandthankyou. And yesterday was his first day of not eating well, regardless of what I gave him so I heard him cry & scream & fuss ALL DAY LONG. And I normally do not tolerate this very well on a good day but when I've been fighting a cold (thanks sister in law!) for nearly two weeks now, I am REALLY not a happy person & I have a very short fuse, of which I am not proud of.
Like I said, at least he's in a good mood - he "helped" me dust this morning - which was way cute so that helped my mood a bit too. And he's interested in his toys again, so that saves me too. We got him some stacking blocks (he has some at Camp Carolina too!) & he is going to be the Master Jenga Player in a few years - he takes the stack apart with one finger pushing them - our kid is going to rock at game parties ;)

The Sleeping Through the Night Thing
And not for entirely selfish reasons since Liam never really woke up at weird middle of the night hours but rather at precisely 11:19pm each and every night - thus not cutting into my sleep time but more cutting into my Me Time. And the peace of mind that comes along with it - I'm finding that I'm more relaxed at night now, not always clock watching until the Shakespearean into the Forest Gang Roll Call arrived & that's a soothing feeling for me!
But to be serious, it's not like I just tune out his stirrings & rolling overs & coughings, I just feel assured now that he will not fully wake up & thus need to be rocked back to sleep for whatever reason and that's a good thing.
I think it was harder for me when he was waking up & we were still up doing Adult Activities or I feared that our Adult Activities, such as TV watching or wine drinking, would wake him up & our shared Me Time would be cut short and since this is no longer the case, we are both able to enjoy this time together in a much more relaxed atmosphere. Thankfully!

Putting himself to sleep!
He cried when we left the room, after going through his routine of getting his chupie, his pillow & turning on the music but that was the only sound we heard out of him!
Matias, I think, is having a hard time with this also - he said "what am I going to do now?". This was also his "special time" with him after work & possibly not seeing him all day...so there will be some adjusting on both our behalf's occuring here.
I'm really not all that shocked that it's happened so quickly - when Liam decides he wants to do something, he really just kind of does it. End of story.
It is an end of an era though. Progress though, for sure, but sadness for Mama & Dada who really love(d) this special time with him.

Possible "duh" moment
All of this is good - no offense intended - we love traveling & we love company. But I think that might have been what messed with Liam's sleep schedule. Or nap schedule to be more exact.
For the past two weeks or so, Liam's nap schedule has been up & down. It first seemed as if he was transitioning to the Big Sleep of One Nap but with the catch of it only lasting under two hours. Which...sucks.
It was really Heads & Tails and we couldn't make sense of it - one day it was Heads and the next day he would have us on our Tails - with no second PM nap - we were really hurting. He would usually nap from around 11 - 1 or if we were really cruising for a bruising from 1pm (or later) till 2pm. Total suckage. And he would stay up to his 9pm nightnight time. Nothing was getting done, it was way too hot outside to spend too long out there - even a trip to the pool didn't induce a noni. Then some mornings he was waking before 8, sometimes before 7 and then the erratic nap pattern. BOO!
But Tuesday, the Grands left (no offense!) and Wednesday he took two naps - each about two hours at his regularly scheduled time and his regular bed time. Just like that. Tuesday, I tried giving him his dinner early & putting him down early - which worked so I was going to repeat it Wednesday when his nap schedule went back on track.
And it made me realize - hey, what if all these [wonderful, loving, fantastic] visitors caused him to throw his routine (and part of our sanity) out the window? And I feel like a moron not figuring this out earlier but he's never reacted like this & well, I don't know maybe, I just wasn't really paying attention to the obvious. I kept looking for teefies, thinking of the Big Sleep of One Nap, and not focusing on the environment changes...
Long story short - he's back to 2 two hour naps at his regularly scheduled time and a 9pm nightnight time. And I cannot see the nose on my face.

Progress!
He was sort of being combative to the extent that he was trying to bite me, throwing his chupie overboard for fun, and grabbing at the "pimp juice extractors" (ahem) so I just put him down in his crib with his [MINE] pillow & chupie & left.
About 10 minutes later, after some playing around but no screaming or crying he was asleep!
[UPDATED: Liam also put himself to sleep again this PM (Thursday) after our time at the pool & not because he was being "combative" but because when Mommy had to "use the facilities" he was asleep when I got back!]

Shifting Schedule
It's hard to tell since he's not at home & he hasn't been on his "regular" schedule with the grandparents visiting and all so I'm not going to commit to this line of thinking until we get him settled back into his own routine. Of course, each kid is different & he very well might be switching his naps already but I wasn't quite prepared for it :) I suppose I will get a lot done during those 3-4 hours smack dab in the middle of the day & I suppose we will be heading out much more in the late afternoon/early evening than we normally do so...
Also with this shift, I think he might be heading back towards an 8pm nightnight time - he switched himself to a 9pm lights out time a while back & it worked a lot better for him - he would go down in 5-15 minutes' time & we wouldn't have any squabbling like we did when we attempted to keep him at an 8pm go nightynighty time. Last night he went to bed at 8pm after napping for 3 hours from 12-3 - but those 5 hours were busy & active so there was definitely no way he was making it to 9pm. He actually fell asleep during the Grandfather clock's (clock!) 8pm chime sequence - it started & he was awake, it finished & he was O-U-T!
Like I said - I'm not committed to this new schedule as I'm not sure he is but we'll flesh it out & see what comes :) What I can say, is Maman will be getting a lot of scrapbooking done with 3-4 hours in the middle of the day suddenly now house-bound!
Aren't you excited that I'm talking about sleep schedules again?!?
Next up - More Teefies! I do believe he is sprouting another upper :)

More on Sleep Schedules
Liam has been a handful the past week. In between cutting a tooth, learning to sit in his crib & changing around his nap schedule he has begun to Manipulate the Arms that Rock Him.
This morning at 5:30am was the FINAL straw for me - Matias had already been in there from about 4:30 till 5:10 when he "woke up" again crying - I went in & he SMILED AT ME. That was it, I wasnt falling for that again. I got him back to sleep & left the room - he started crying right away. Not tears streaming down his face crying, but a pouty, noise making cry more akin to "where did you go?" than "I NEED YOU FOR SOMETHING". So I let him cry. And he did cry for more than 5 minutes, then the silence would come, then the lamenting, then the silence. Wash, Lather, Rinse, Repeat until 6:30am when I finally went in to see if he was hungry. He nursed like the Pimp that he is, smiled & coo'ed at me and went back to sleep. Until I put him down. But I walked away & left him crying. He was warm, feed & dry - my top three conditions for leaving him sobbing. But I'm not going to lie to you, I cried lying in bed, knowing that if I picked him up he would stop, but also because I knew he was playing us. We've created this problem by "loving him too much" & that sucks. I mean, he doesnt cry cause he's neglected, hurt or in pain, he cries because he WANTS US & is that REALLY a bad thing?
Yes, it is. When it happens 4097852 times during the night. And I'm going to say it again...Liam does NOT cry unless he REALLY, SERIOUSLY NEEDS SOMETHING. So the CIO method has NEVER appealed to us because why would we make him go through something that he normally avoids like peas? (peas are the new plague, fyi), so it's been really hard on us to come to this decision but when I told Matias that he smiled at me that sealed the deal for both of us.
I'm hoping it helps though because he should be sleeping longer during the night. And since I still worry about his weight, I'm not going to turn him away from the Juice, as long as he nurses properly. When he starts yanking my chain (wow, I really could have gone with a different word there but I'm keeping it clean, folks) about that, then I will cut him off.
So to recap last night - he was up twice before midnight, once at 1am to nurse, 4:30-5:10 he was sleeping in Daddy's arms, 5:30am smiling at me through his crocodile tears, 6:30am nursing, and then he did cry again at some point BUT we had to WAKE HIM UP AT 10AM. And I just dont know what to think about that...did he really fall back asleep in the early hours or was he just quietly defeated? Did he sleep right through till we woke him by standing over his crib and going "What?" out loud because he was tired from not sleeping most of the night? Did he just give up & realize we werent coming for him & just stayed there quietly until we came & got him? I'm telling you, none of those thoughts make me feel any less like crying myself.
And his crib was a disaster. Cuddle pillow was all jacked up at one end of the crib, Curious George was buried under his blankie that he was sleeping on top of on his stomach, chupies tossed everywhere...it looked like he sat there & just tossed everything in sight until he wore himself out or if he spent all his time playing. And ALL that makes me want to do is HOLD HIM ALL DAY TO MAKE UP FOR IT. But doesnt look like I'll get the chance seeing as he's been sleeping since noon & it's two o'clock now...
I know I'm not a bad mother. I know this. But I feel like I've let him down somehow & telling me I havent will not make me un-think that. And I feel like I have to shower him with affection all day to make up for the times I REFUSED to go cuddle him. See Mom, I feel guilt, I just dont do guilt trips! So, I'm a little down today when I should not be - we have so many exciting things happening now and in the coming week that I should be focusing on but it's hard. And my heart thump-thumped a little this morning when he tried to crawl into Daddy's lap to have a book read to him and Daddy didnt know what he was doing (usually does this with Mommy) and when I told him to put him in his lap, Liam turned and hugged on his neck before settling in for a reading of Animal Kisses.

Going to Grandma & Grandpa's (and Auntie's!)
I'm just packing up all our Stuff & waiting on the little Fellow to finish his nap, no rush!, so I can get his stuff in his room.
He slept in this morning, 9am, so he didnt go down for his nap until 11am! I dont know what came over him but it was fine with me! He's been a HUGE Mommy's Boy the past couple days & will only calm down/go back to sleep for Momma so I've been up every.single.time with him for this entire week. I get a tad cranky about that.
And not to babble on about his sleep schedule, BUT, he has been waking 1-2 times a night (including the SitFG) to be nursed but other than that when he finally goes down and stays down he sleeps well past 8am. If he sleeps through the night, with either no wakings or only 1, he wakes at 7am. Real Catch-22 in this house.

The Karmic Bitch Slap
I say he naps perfectly then the past two days his naps have been horrible. Two 40 minute naps a day, that's it. And he's horribly cranky & terrificly teething for the last 2-3 hours of his day. Almost falling asleep in his oatmeal and going to bed early.
The other night while Matias was at a lecture, I was charged with putting Liam down for the night. Matias came home, we had dinner, were sitting our asses on our couch & we looked at the clock, looked at each other and THOUGHT ABOUT commenting that it was past the Shakespearean into the Forest Gang Roll Call time. I instantly made Matias bite his tongue and not let the words past his lips, but it was too late. The THINKING ABOUT IT was enough. Not five minutes later, at twenty past twelve, did the Sprites induce our Fellow into the Forest.
So I'm going to stop talking about "certain things" cause there's some weird, mind-reading business going on & I'm not going to continue to tempt him.
Instead, I'm going to write & talk about things like " dont eat your peas", "dont take longer naps", & "I hope these teefies NEVER come in!" & see what comes of it.
Ergo (that's my fancy thesaurus.com way of not saying "so" so much...), Liam please do not eat your peas! Please do not take any naps longer than 40 minutes! And finally, I hope you live forever with your gummy toothless mouth!

Contain your excitment - it's a post about sleep schedules!
YAY. Mommy REALLY enjoys the uninterrupted sleep.
He still wakes up at either 11:19 or 11:21 (I suppose it depends on what clock you are looking at cause heaven forbid any of our clocks sync up...) for his Shakespearean into the Forest Gang Roll Call (please leave me a comment if you know what I mean by that...turns out neither my mom or Matias understood...) but then quickly goes back into a nice, deep slumber.
Until 2:30 when he eats for 30 minutes and is back into a nice, deep slumber.
Until 7:40 when he wakes up for the day.
Like I said earlier, I'm fine with the nighttime nursing, if he's hungry, I'm feeding him. Bottom Line. End of Story. LALALA I'm Not Listening to You. And I dont mind that he sleeps until almost 8 either - no complaints from me!
Mommy is getting about 9 hours of sleep actually & THANK YOU JESUS! Cause then I'm on the clock from 7:40 till 8pm and that makes for a really long day - gee, you think??
So with that Most Obvious Statement of the Year sitting up there I will leave this with saying - thank you, Liam, for getting back onto a NORMAL sleep schedule, even if it does still include a Roll Call from your Sprites & a mid-night feeding.

I promise this is the last one for a while!
The naps are perfect. He never had any problems with his naps as of late - he goes down for 2 hours (sometimes more) around 10:30 and then again around 2:30 for usually only 1 1/2 hours. If he only takes a nap that is less than an hour he goes down again between 5:30 & 6:00 depending upon what time he woke up from his earlier nap. And then he's ready for bed at 8pm.
With him sleeping with his (MY!) cuddle pillow at night it has greatly reduced the number of times he wakes up and the duration that he is up for. The last two nights has seen him waking at 11:30 for his Shakespearean into the Forest Gang roll call, and then again at 2ish for a nursing session. We rock him, put him back in with his (MY!) cuddle pillow and he's good until 8am. YES.
We are thinking about moving his furniture around - moving his crib to where his dresser is - to see if being on an inside wall helps at all. He's never cold & I'm always checking for that but maybe it's too loud on that one wall...we havent done it yet cause Matias is still regaining his "strength" from his cold (his sister ended up with a 104 temp. - the one who has a baby and is still nursing) so we might do that in the coming days. I'm a little leery that moving his crib might throw him off though and cause a whole new set of sleep issues.
I'm ok with the 2am-ish nursing because he's been "asleep" for 6 hours & if he wants food, I'm giving it to him. With him only being the in 50th percentile for weight, I'm always keeping my eye on his food/calorie intake & do not want to make a hungry go back to sleep. I know he should be sleeping just a little longer but like I said if he wants it he's going to get it. It was starting to become an issue when he wanted to nurse EVERY TIME he woke up, but he's gotten over that quickly.
So HOORAY for the cuddle pillow (MINE!) and let's hope that continues to work for him!

Roll Call!
Wednesday, February 21, 2007
I'm going to jinx it, I know
He skipped the beginning of his Issues at 10:30ish and now we have passed the Shakespearean into the Forest Gang roll call.
All is quiet on the Western Prince William County Front.
Separation Anxiety?
The little monster slept through from a 2:30 feeding until 7:40! I'm beginning to wonder if he was anxious about being separated from his cuddle pillow and NOT FROM US!
Either way, he got really good sleep last night & we did too! YAY for SLEEP! He was crying this morning since we didnt jump up quick enough and go get him & I found Mystic keeping guard outside his room. She's really become quite the little Protector of this Liam Fellow!
And back to the Cuddle Pillow - this is the same pillow that we had in the hospital and that he spent most of his 'newborn' time sleeping on when he wasnt in his cradle. So I'm thinking he's become attached to this pillow and this is now one of his "loveies" (god that word makes me want to stab my eyes out)...

Going Crazy, one night at a time
He sleeps for about 2 hours and then wakes up and will not go back to sleep for about 40 minutes...you do the math...
I'm exhausted & HOPING that I do not get this flu thing that we brought home with us - also, crossing fingers that Liam doesn't get it either but he seems ok so far.
I know he is teething but since nothing has broken through yet, I'm not 100% sure I should allow that reason to account for his Issues. I also really believe that he is playing us to an extent & I'm not pleased with that at all because Matias & I are at odds about how to handle it.
There's your update - hope you enjoyed it ;) I'll post more & include some pictures soon!!

New Game & more sleep talk
He LOVES it. He squeals and tries to hit all these new pitches that he is discovering and then I scream louder than him and he goes crazy. It's the simple things, really, that keep our kid happy, isnt it?
Matias could not really get over this little interaction we had going on because it's normally played as we wait for him to get home - that horrible, almost melt-down , bored you Mommy, where the devil is Daddy time - and nothing else keeps him occupied. So we have a ton of pictures & possibly even video of it all because he is that funny.
Last night was one of the roughest for our little Fellow. To preface this though I must add that Mommy & Daddy went to bed late after watching a movie (The Devil wears Prada) and then some episodes of SATC (season 5) that we have recently 'acquired'. And by late, I mean 2am. I was up with him from 3am-5am and then Matias was up with him from 5am-6:30. I didnt realize he had gotten up & was even missing out of the bed until we discussed his poor sleeping this morning. We just moved his nursing chair into his room & that saved both of us last night as we rocked him (and probably snoozed a little ourselves) in his room without bringing him into ours and possibly waking the other up. But the little guy was so uncomfortable. He had been up prior to the early AM times too - at like 10pm he woke up and nursed for a LONG time - this was after having 4 oz. of carrots and cereal after his last nursing that evening. I could not believe he was hungry again, but hungry again he was. He slept until about 8:30am so we probably have a combined total of 5 hours sleep MAYBE for him & more like 3 hours sleep for each Mommy & Daddy. Matias asked me what was wrong this morning cause my eyes were all red, he thought I had been crying - exhaustion, sweetie.
We are going to Target today to get his NEW car seat & some Motrin. I'm not a believer in medicating your kid to make them sleep/behave but I do hope that it brings some relief to him & allows him to rest. We plan on going after his nap & I'm interested to see how long he is out for today. Yesterday he didnt take 2 hour + naps but I had someone over to Crop so I'm thinking we might have messed with his sleep since we are located right under his room...
It will be nice to be able to talk about something other than naps & sleep schedules though! And it would also be nice for Liam to realize that you cannot really successfully fall asleep sitting up.

Nap time!
Still feeling this one out, it seems...
